2017 Volkswagen Polo almost revealed as VW reveals the new Polo’s debut is on Friday

2017 Volkswagen Polo almost revealed

The new Volkswagen Polo will be revealed in Berlin this Friday – 16 June 2017 – ahead of which VW heralds its arrival with the first photo of the Polo.

At the end of last year, VW launched the Volkswagen Polo Match Edition as a limited edition run-out model for the current Polo, so we knew the all-new Polo was soon to arrive.

It’s taken a bit longer than we expected, but Volkswagen has now confirmed it will be revealed this Friday – 16 June 2017 – in Berlin, and to whet appetites they’ve issued the first photo of the new Polo.

The photo (above) isn’t exactly a major reveal, but it confirms a chunk of what we already know about the new Polo, and how it’s going to compete with the new Ford Fiesta.

VW has a bit of a problem with the Polo in that if they make it too good it will take sales from the Golf, but if they don’t make it appealing enough then sales will be lost to the Fiesta.

So this sixth generation Polo gets a new platform – the MQB A0 – which is shared with the new SEAT Ibiza and the next Skoda Fabia, which is cheaper to produce and lighter too despite being longer and wider and with an increased wheelbase.

Styling looks to be influenced by the Golf, so we can expect a Polo which looks a bit more aggressive and upmarket than the current car, giving it visual appeal against the new Fiesta.

VW are also upping the ante in the interior with more high quality materials and soft touch plastics, new touchscreen infotainment options and more technology, including stuff like Park Assist and keyless.

Engine choice is also expected to be more limited to cut costs, with the 1.0 litre three-pot petrol offered in a range of power outputs from 65bhp to 115bhp, perhaps the bigger 1.5 litre petrol from the Golf and probably a 2.0 litre petrol for the Polo GTi when that arrives and, at least for now, a selection of power outputs on a 1.6 litre diesel.

Klaus Bischoff, VW’s Head of Design, said:

The new Polo makes a confident, sporty and emotional impression down to the last detail.

This Volkswagen can immediately be made out as the original of its class, but also as a completely new generation. A Polo with an expressive design which makes the compact sportier, cleaner and unique within the brand range. This is a car that fits in perfectly with our times – both visually and technologically.

Expect full details on the new VW Polo on Friday.
