ALL Volvo cars will be ELECTRIFIED by 2019 – is this the end of the diesel engine? (video)

Volvo has announced that from 2019 all its cars will have some sort of electrification – hybrid, plug-in hybrid or EV – and the end of pure ICE cars.

It’s been clear for some time that the immediate future for cars is to have electric assistance in some form, as emissions regulations get more expensive to manage for car makers and buyers are turned off diesel engines.

Now Volvo has taken the bold step of announcing that all their cars, from 2019, will come with some form of electrical assistance.

That electric assistance for the Volvo range will include full BEVs, plug-in hybrids and 48 volt mild hybrid setups. Which, although Volvo doesn’t say so, sounds like the end of the diesel engine too – at least at Volvo.

Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo CEO, said:

People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.

The electrified options will extend right across the Volvo range, from the about to be announced 40 Series range, the new XC60 and its soon to arrive siblings, the 90 Series range – and the mooted 20 Series cars – and is the first time a Premium car maker has been bold enough to jump in to electrification wholesale.

Volvo has also confirmed five all-new fully electric cars will launch between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvos, and two electric cars from the new Polestar standalone range.

It looks like Toyota and Lexus had it right all along.
