Vauxhall has released details of the engines for the new Astra

Vauxhall released a fair bit of information on the Insignia inspired new Astra back in May. That was followed up with video of the new Astra blatting round Millbrook and details of the new Astra’s interior. But with the official launch of the Astra at Frankfurt looming, Vauxhall has now released details of the engine range for the new car. Not surprisingly, the main focus is on smaller displacement and lower emissions.

The new range of engines for the Astra reduce CO2 emissions by 10% and improve economy by a similar amount. The biggest change is probably the introduction of a 1.4 litre petrol turbo, which produces 138bhp and 147lb/ft of torque (so it will probably need revving). But it does offer 15% more torque than the unit it replaces – the 1.8 litre petrol unit – whilst cutting emissions and maintaining output.

Other petrol engines available include a normally aspirated 1.4 that emits just 129g/km and a pair of 1.6 litres – a turbo with 180bhp and an un-blown version with 115bhp. Also on offer are three diesels – 1.3, 1.7 and 2.0 litre – with output from 93-158bhp and all emit less than 130g/km. Vauxhall also plans to launch an Astra ecoFLEX at a later stage that will have emissions of 109g/km.

The standard ‘box on the new Astra will be a six-speed manual, apart from the basic 1.4 and 1.6 petrols and the 1.3CDTi which will get a five-speed. An auto option will be available for the petrol units.
