New Hyundai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle revealed ahead of CES Debut

A new Hyundai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCEV) has been revealed ahead of a debut at the 2018 CES in Las Vegas as Hyundai push on with Hydrogen-powered cars.

All the headlines at the moment for AFVs revolves around battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and the promise of greater range and real world usability. But Hyundai is still convinced the future lies with hydrogen-powered cars.

There may be big obstacles to be overcome to make cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells commercially viable – cost and a refuelling infrastructure amongst others – but Hyundai and others are still, quite rightly, pursuing the goal of a hydrogen future.

They currently have one of the few available FCEVs in the Hyundai ix35, but now there’s a new Hyundai FCEV on the way, and we get the first details, and photos, ahead of its debut at CES next week.

Hyundai aren’t revealing what they’re calling their new FCEV (that’s to be revealed at the CES) but it looks pretty much like the FE Fuel Cell concept we saw from Hyundai in Geneva last year. 

Assuming Hyundai are able to deliver a production model in this new FCEV which matches the promise of the FE Concept, it will mean a replacement for the iX35 FCEV which offer a 20 per cent lighter fuel stack, 30 per cent greater power density and a range of around 500 miles. Which is a lot better than any BEV can muster.

But what the new FCEV alos offers is a perfect platform for new autonomous driving technology as it can deliver the electrical power to drive the data transfer and sensors needed for self-driving cars, something BEVs struggle to deliver.

Hyundai will also be showcasing hydrogen-powered applications for home us at CES, as well as announcing a partnership with self-driving tech company Aurora Innovation.
