A first look at the 2019 Suzuki Jimny
There’s a new Suzuki Jimny on the way this year, ahead of which Suzuki has released a couple of photos so we know what to expect from the new Jimny.
If you want a classless, capable, funky little off-roader – and you’re quite happy to put up with on-road manners which are modest at best – then you probably want a Suzuki Jimny. But if you do fancy a Jimny you’d be better off hanging on a little while until this, the new Suzuki Jimny, arrives later this year, promising more of the same but with a bit more ‘modern’ thrown in the mix.
Suzuki hasn’t actually ‘revealed’ the new Jimny – that comes in a few months – but we do get a couple of photos, just so we know the new Jimny isn’t going to stray too far from the old Jimny.
That means a distinctly old school boxy shape – almost like a toy G-Class – with squared-off wheel arches, short overhangs for good departure angles and a look which says ‘Yes, I can do it’.
Under the skin is a serious off-road ladder frame chassis, beam axles and a part time 4WD setup with low range transfer box.
Engines are expected to be a small 90bhp four-pot as well as a more lively 1.0 litre turbo three-pot, and although the interior will still be basic and functional it does look a bit more modern.
The current Suzuki Jimny starts from around £12k, and we don’t expect the new Jimny to stray too far from that cheap as chips formula when it arrives in the UK, probably at the start of 2019 after an official reveal in Japan over the summer.
