Ford Escort RS1600 and Sierra Sapphire Cosworth sold for RECORD prices

A 1972 Ford Escort RS1600 and a 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth have sold for world record prices at Silverstone auctions as classic fast Fords continue to be in big demand.

Last month we reported that a stunning 1972 Ford Escort RS1600 was heading to Silverstone Auctions, and that it had a very chunky guide price of £60-70k which, for anyone who knew the car in period, seems unbelievable.

But such was the competition in the sale room for the RS1600 it ended up selling for a whopping £70,875, a world record price, as perhaps the best example of the fewer than 50 RS1600s still left in the UK.

But the Escort RS1600 wasn’t the only ‘classic’ fast Ford to go for a record breaking price.

A 1990 Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth (that’s the saloon version) went for a very impressive £52,750 – more than £20k above estimate – creating another world record price. Although the Sapphire Cosworth was an exceptional car.

With one lady owner from new, this Sapphire Cosworth has just 13,310 miles on the clock and came up for sale after the ‘Essex Girl’ owner gave up driving at aged 80, delivering a Cosworth to the market complete with all its documents including every tax disc and MOT from new.

Also auctioned by Silverstone was the first RHD Audi Quattro to arrive in the UK in 1982, which sold for £49,500.
