Aston Martin Valkyrie V12 Cosworth Engine is an AURAL delight

The V12 Cosworth engine in the Aston Martin Valkyrie delivers 1000bhp, revs to 11,100 rpm and sounds like nothing else in this video from AML.

The world is falling out with big cylinder count engines, with V8s and V12s giving way to small three and four pot lumps with forced induction as car makers desperately try to keep their emissions levels from bankrupting them.

But building a short run, massively expensive, hypercar means impact on average emissions, even for small car maker like Aston Martin, is less of a concern than delivering an engine like nothing else. And that’s what Aston Martin has done, with Cosworth, for the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

With the Valkyrie heading for reality next year, AML has delivered a video to show us how it will sound, echoing the engines from 1990s F1 but doing so in a new engine which benefits from 20-odd years of additional advances in engineering and materials.

The 6.5 litre V12 engine from Cosworth weighs just 206kg, develops 1,000bhp at 10,500rpm and 546lb/ft of torque at 7000rpm and revs past 11,000rpm. It will also be boosted beyond that with an (as yet undisclosed) hybrid element.

Aston Martin’s Andy Palmer said:

To anyone with a drop of petrol in their blood, a high-revving naturally aspirated V12 is the absolute pinnacle. Nothing sounds better or encapsulates the emotion and excitement of the internal combustion engine more completely. Despite the apparently insurmountable challenges it presented, there was never any question that the Aston Martin Valkyrie would make do with anything less. From the outset the team at Cosworth were unflinching in their commitment to achieving benchmarks which pushed the boundaries of the possible. The result is a quite extraordinary engine. One which I doubt will ever be surpassed.

Aston say the Valkyrie’s 1000bhp V12 is a masterpiece. We find it hard to argue.
