New Skoda Scala goes in to production – on sale in the UK later this year

The new Skoda Scala – Skoda’s replacement for the Rapid and competition for the Ford Focus – starts production ahead of going on sale in the UK.

After something of a tease, the Skoda Scala was revealed back in December as Skoda replace the less than inspiring Rapid with a car which promises to be far more appealing.

Underpinned by the A0 version of VW’s MQB Platform, the Scala is actually a bit bigger than the VW Golf, targeting both its sister company’s Golf and Ford’s Focus as it seeks to perform in a sector the Rapid never had a chance in.

Influenced by the Vision RS Concept, the Scala is a rather more tame take, but it still looks appealing, and Skoda are convinced that by spelling out ‘SKODA’ on the back end it looks more premium too.

Now, ahead of going on sale in a few months in the UK, the Scala has started running off the production line at Skoda’s main plant in Mladá Boleslav. Michael Oeljeklaus, Skoda’s Production boss, said:

The start of production of the all-new ŠKODA SCALA is a very special occasion for the entire company, especially for our workforce. The new model was designed and developed in Mladá Boleslav – and it will be built here from today, as well.

Initially, the Skoda Scala will be offered in the UK with a choice of two petrol and two diesel engines when it goes on sale.
