Aston Martin DBX struts its SUV chops on Swedish snow

Aston Martin is back with more ‘Spy’ photos and video of the new DBX SUV as it tackles cold climate testing on Swedish snow.

Aston Martin may be changing direction with its new mid-engined supercars, planning to take on Ferrari and McLaren with the new mid-engined Vanquish and stun the world with the Valkyrie hypercar. 

But the Aston Martin which will make the most difference to Aston’s bottom line isn’t going to be a mid-engined supercar or more traditional front-engined GT, but this – the Aston Martin DBX.

Aston Martin clearly decided from the off that they would deliver ‘Spy’ photos of the DBX out playing, and the latest sees Aston’s new DBX strutting its SUV chops at Pirelli’s winter testing ground in Sweden.

It may be a year before the production version of the DBX goes in to production, but the DBX is a big deal not just because of the effect it should have on Aston’s profits, but because it will be the first all-new Aston model to arrive in a long time, and the first to be built at Aston’s new plant in Wales (hence the Red Dragon on the side of the DBX).

Aston Martin’s Chief engineer, Matt Becker, said:

The Aston Martin DBX needs to be ready for a wide range of multi-terrain surfaces, so in addition to testing the car in normal day-to-day situations, we need to test it in extreme conditions such as these. Testing these prototypes in cold climate conditions helps us to assess the car’s early dynamics and crucially ensure confidence inspiring sure-footedness on low grip surfaces. 

There will be lots more to come in this vein before the DBX actually arrives as a production model.
