Ford Fiesta Ecoboost Hybrid and Focus Ecoboost Hybrid on the way
Ford will reveal two new mild hybrid models next week – the Fiesta Ecoboost Hybrid and Focus Ecoboost Hybrid – as it increases its electrification options.
We’ve already seen the Mondeo Hybrid from Ford, but next week they will reveal two new hybrid cars and a couple of hybrid CVs too.The Ford Fiesta Ecoboost Hybrid and Focus Ecoboost Hybrid will be revealed at a special “Go Further” experience in Amsterdam on 2 April as Ford starts to make good on its promise to offer some form of electrification right across its range in future.
The new Fiesta and Focus Hybrids are very much mild hybrids, with the alternator getting replaced by a belt-driven integrated starter/generator (BISG) to allow recovery and storage of energy lost during braking and coasting, charging a 48v lithium-ion battery.
The BISG can then act as a motor using the energy stored to give a bit of a torque boost to the 1.0 litre three-cylinder ICE, promising to deliver more responsive performance. The arrival of the BISG has also allowed Ford to fit a bigger turbo to the engine without the inevitable turbo lag you’d get without the BISG.
Ford reckon the Fiesta Hybrid will be good for emissions of 112g/km and 57.65mpg, and the Focus Hybrid 106g/km and 60.1mpg. Ford will also launch a Transit Custom EcoBlue Hybrid and Tourneo Custom EcoBlue Hybrid at the Amsterdam event.
