Volkswagen ID Roomzz Concept Electric SUV
Volkswagen has revealed the ID Roomzz Concept at the Shanghai Motor Show, a large electric SUV with sliding doors and 302bhp.
If you hadn’t worked it out yet, Volkswagen is throwing its hat in to the electric car ring with a vengeance as it seeks to distance itself from the dieslegate scandal, and aims to be the world’s go-to electric car maker, keeping its fingers crossed in the process we’ll all decide we want an electric car in the coming years. The latest electric car salvo from VW is the ID Roomzz Concept (above) which is revealed in Shanghai as a large electric SUV with smooth styling and sliding doors, previewing a production model VW say will hit showrooms in 2021. Although the showrooms VW really want it to be flying out of are in the USA and China, rather than the UK and Europe.
The VW Roomzz is almost five metres long and is said to have more interior space than the VW Touareg, with a design featuring a smooth enclosed nose with light bars to look like a grille, illuminated VW badge, strong wheelarches, sliding doors, cameras for mirrors, full width light graphics on the tailgate and a bit of a roof turret for the Lidar sensors feeding the level four autonomous abilities.
Inside there’s a digitised steering wheel which moves away when the car’s in control, augmented HUD, 13.8″ digital instrument panel and seating for four in individual seats. But expect the production version to be a seven-seat model with three rows.
Power is supplied by an 82kWh battery pack on the floor, powering two electric motors – one at the front and one at the back – with a combined output of 302bhp, good for 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds and a range of 280 miles. VW say the Roomzz will take 150kW charging so an 80 per cent charge should take around 30 minutes.
VW say the ID Roomzz will arrive by 2021 as a production model. But we suspect it will differ quite significantly from the concept.
