Richard Branson and Gerry McGovern with the Range Rover Astronaut Edition
Land Rover Special Vehicle Operation has created a custom Range Rover – The Range Rover Astronaut Edition – for flyers in Virgin Galactic.
Jaguar Land Rover are ‘sponsors’ of the Virgin Galactic project – Richard Branson’s wheeze to get normal punters in to space – so they’ve decided it makes sense to spend time and effort on building a special Range Rover for those who hop in to space on Dickie’s Bird – the Range Rover Astronaut Edition.Land Rover Special Vehicle Operation (SVO) has built the astronaut Range Rover by adding some ‘astronauty’ bits to a regular Range Rover in the hope that the 600 people already signed up for a Virgin Galactic short hop in to space will be happy to spend a six-figure sum on ‘their’ exclusive model. But as they’re already spending almost £200k on the flight, they can probably afford the Range Rover too.
Titivations include a Zero Gravity Blue paint job, custom puddle lights, Astronaut Edition badges, DNA of Flight graphic on the centre console and engraved door handles.
There are also two discs in the cup holders crafted from the landing skid from the Virgin Spaceship Unity, one with a quote from Branson and one with flight details. Once buyers have had their flight the discs will be replaced with ones made from part of the skid on their flight.
The Range Rover Astronaut Edition comes with either the Range Rover’s new plug-in hybrid or the venerable V8 Supercharged. No price details have been released.
