Last Mitsubishi Shogun in the UK
The Mitsubishi Shogun has reached the end of the line, with the last ever Shogun in the UK added to Mitsubishi’s Heritage Fleet.
If you want a proper, big and chunky, hardcore off-road SUV, the choice is very limited. The new Land Rover Defender promises to offer a back to basics off-road version, but it’ll be a while before you can buy one, the Mercedes G-Wagen can do the proper rufty-tuft stuff but it costs and arm and a leg, and then there’s the Toyota Land Cruiser and the Mitsubishi Shogun. But that’s about it.
Now, sadly, the choice is even more limited, as the Mitsubishi Shogun comes to the end of the road as Mitsubishi struggle to find a way to move it forward.
We last tested the Mitsubishi Shogun back in 2010, but it hasn’t changed a huge amount since then. It’s a bit agricultural to drive, it’s about as quick as a lively pensioner on a mobility scooter, and it’s big.
But it’s an enormously reassuring car to drive, so able and solid you forgive its old-fashioned feel and revel instead in its insistence on doing one thing very well.
But now production of the Shogun has ended, and Mitsubishi don’t yet seem to have found a way to replace it in a way than makes business sense for them. Which is a real shame.
The last Mitsubishi Shogun to arrive in the UK has been grabbed by Mitsubishi UK and added to its Heritage Fleet to remind us all what we’re missing.
It’s a white Mitsubishi Shogun SWB Barbarian, the last of a line of 114,164 Shoguns brought to the UK since the Shogun launched in 1982
Rob Lindley, Mitsubishi UK MD, said:
The Shogun was an incredibly important vehicle for us, helping us to be one of the leaders in the 4WD and SUV segments from as long ago as the early 1980s and rapidly grow our brand presence in the UK. The sheer number of Shoguns sold to such a broad range of customers, spanning private motorists right through to the emergency services, and the length of the production run shows how well loved the Shogun is.
We’re delighted to now have the last example registered in the UK on our heritage fleet, its inclusion recognising its significance in the success that we enjoy today and a permanent reminder of just how good it was.
