Bentley Bentayga SUV shows its off-road prowess
The new Bentley Bentayga SUV – Bentley’s challenge for the Range Rover market – shows its off-road abilities in a new ‘tease’ video from Bentley.
The last time we saw the Bentley Bentayga, it was blatting round the Nurburgring looking a bit like a fish out of water.
But in this latest ‘keep the Bentayga in the public eye’ video from Bentley, the new SUV does look a bit more comfortable tackling a bit of off-roading in an effort to prove – whether owners choose to use it or not – that it really can do the rough stuff.
Bentley has already admitted that the Bentayga won’t be as clever or complete off-road as a Range Rover, but are banking on the underpinnings from the new Audi Q7 being a good enough starting point to deliver a Bentley that at least doesn’t embarrass itself when the going gets tough.
And in many ways, that’s what Bentley is trying to do with the Bentayga: Make it good at everything it does in the hope that the sum of its parts will be greater than any individual element of its abilities.
So it won’t be as good as a Range Rover off-road, although it will be competent. It won’t handle like a Porsche Cayenne, but it will be quicker in a straight line. And it won’t cosset like a Flying Spur, but it will come close in most situations.
Whether that will be enough to stop buyers who could afford a Range Rover and a Flying Spur – and have a Ferrari or McLaren for performance play – from buying in to a Bentley that appears to be a mixture of all those abilities, we’ll have to wait and see.
But with prices from around £150k – and rising depending on spec and engine, engines which will include the new W12, V8, hybrid and maybe even a diesel – it will probably be an addition to the garage of buyers who already have all these cars, rather than a one size fits all compromise replacement.
Still, just as long as it sells.
