BMW Vision iNEXT EV Concept teased ahead of next week’s reveal
The BMW Vision iNEXT EV Concept – a first look at BMW’s electric future – will be showcased around the world in the back of a Boeing 777.
It’s more than three months since BMW last teased the iNext Concept heading for a reveal this year, and the arrival of a new tease (above) signals its debut is close. The design sketch we saw then delivered an outline of an electric car we now expect to be a Crossover / SUV, and it’s expected to be about the size of an X5 and the first car to be built on BMW’s new platform for EVs. It will also come with a high level of autonomous driving abilities.
But the production iNext isn’t due to arrive in BMW showrooms until 2021, despite which BMW are going all-out to make the debut of the iNext Concept a real event.
Instead of doing what you might expect – a press jolly to Germany or a motor show debut – BMW has decided to enlist the help of Lufthansa to turn a Cargo Boeing 777F in to a flying showcase for the iNext, and it will be flying from Munich to New York on 9 September and then on to San Francisco and Beijing, returning to Frankfurt on 14 September.
The cargo 777 conversion in to flying presentation arena involves 7.5km of wiring, 78,000 LEDs, and ten 13,000 ANSI lumen projectors to deliver a stunning show inside the 777 to up to 300 invitees.
BMW reckon the 777 will be ready to become an iNext presentation centre within eight hours of landing, and ready to take off for its next destination just four hours after the presentation ends.
BMW’s Klaus Fröhlich said:
iNEXT is our mobility proposition for the future, so it’s only logical that the BMW Vision iNEXT should be presented to a global audience in a fresh new style.
The World Flight is a fitting way to get the ball rolling.
It all sounds suitably glitzy and glossy, but we do wonder how a 777 blatting round four cities on three continents fits with the ‘Green’ future BMW envisages for its iNext EVs.
