Diesel Car Magazine has declared the Citroen C4 Cactus its car of the year 2015, along with other awards for cars including the Tesla Model S as Eco Car of the year.
Annual car awards are interesting things, more for how much you disagree with the verdict of the panel. And the Diesel Car Magazine Awards for 2015 leave plenty of room for argument.Top of the tree in this year’s awards is the funky and affordable – if rather odd – Citroen C4 Cactus, with DieselCar proclaiming it personifies the times with its affordability, practicality and comfort. All of which is true, but the best car?
We don’t find too much to argue with on many of the other categories, with the Ford Focus grabbing best Medium car and Ford Fiesta the best small car, whilst at the other end of the scale the Mercedes S Class grabs best Executive car and the new Volvo XC90 best 4×4.
On a practical note, the choice of the Skoda Octavia Estate as best estate is fine (although we’re not too sure about the Citroen Grand C4 Picasso as best MPV ), but a slightly odd choice is the Tesla Model S as best Eco Car – which is fine by us, but in a diesel awards? Still, it obviously fits in to DieselCar’s sphere of interest somehow.
The XC90’s inclusion – even though it’s not really in the wild to judge yet, is just about acceptable, but however good the new Jaguar XE turns out to be we’re not entirely sure there’s enough evidence to make it the best Large car. And the Audi TT as best Sports car? Really? Perhaps, on second thoughts, with a diesel engine it is?
Still, it’s all – to a great degree – subjective. You, dear reader, no doubt have your own opinion?
