Citroen has revealed the GQbyCITROEN Concept, designed from a brief by GQ Magazine. But does this preview the Citroen DS5?
Citroen have been hot on concepts lately, and you can feel a new found dynamism and willingness to push the boundaries, which is evident in the confidently executed concepts they manage to keep churning out.
The latest concept to come from Citroen is the GQbyCITROEN. The what? Yes, you read that right – this is a Citroen Concept inspired by GQ Magazine. Nothing wrong with that, but it seems an expensive project for a Men’s Magazine to concieve and implement, even a successful publication like GQ.
On the face of it the GQbyCITROEN has been produced from a brief by GQ’s editor, Dylan Jones (trendy man; style guru, ubiquitous columnist) to produce the ‘Ultimate Gentleman’s Drive’. The GTbyCITROEN is the result. The normal trendy criteria for the oily bits was a given, so the GQbyCITROEN gets a hybrid powerplant with a 1.6 litre 4-pot petrol with an electric motor somewhere (Citroen are very vague about what’s under the skin) which has a claimed 0-60mph of 4.5 seconds and emits just 80g/km CO2. At the same time, we feel sure.
So are GQ chuffed with what Citroen has created? Dylan Jones said:
“I wanted something practical, something cool, and something idiosyncratic – i.e. something surprising that didn’t just look like a concept car. The GQ car needed to have the ‘want’ factor, but it also needed to look, feel and ‘drive’ like the sort of car no sane man could choose to ignore. We think it looks very very special.”
So everyones’s happy. GQ get a nice piece for the April Edition and Citroen get to show a new concept. But is all as it seems? We’re not too sure. We wonder if this is a mild GQ-ising of a car we expect to see before too long – the Citroen DS5. The DS5 is expected to be based on the Hypnos Concept and we have to say there are strong similarities. And it would make sense. Have a look at the Citroen DS5 / Hypnos piece we did last year and see what you think.
But for now at least this is the GQbyCITROEN. Not the Citroen DS5 to be.
