Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid is the FASTEST Hybrid…in the WORLD
The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has set a new world land speed record for a production-based hybrid car of 157.825mph at Bonneville Salt Flats.
The new Hyundai Ioniq only went on sale in the UK this week – well, the hybrid and BEV versions did – and look to be a promising leap in to ‘Green-ness’ by Hyundai. The cheapest, and least complicated, of the three powertrains on offer in the Ioniq – the Ioniq Hybrid – comes with a 1.6 litre mild hybrid setup with 140bhp and official economy of 74.2mpg, 0-62mph of 10.8 seconds and a top speed of 115mph. The perfect alternative to a rather more ‘dirty’ diesel powertrain for those who only want to dip their toe in the water of green-ness.
Which is all very sensible as a family car, but not exactly performance oriented. So you may be surprised to learn that the rather sensible Hyundai Ioniq now holds the world land speed record for production-based hybrid car.
To be fair, the Hyundai Ioniq used to set the land speed record at Bonneville Salt Flats did have a bit of help, not least a healthy dose of nitrous as well as a bit of ECU tweaking, low restriction breathing, added aero tweaks, fettled suspension and a great big lump of Salt Flat.
The result is a new world record speed of 157.825mph and a peak exit speed of 160.7mph. Which is a tad quicker than the car you can grab from your local Hyundai dealer.
Mike O’Brien, a US Hyundai VP, said:
We couldn’t be more proud in setting the FIA hybrid-category record with our new Ioniq hybrid
Our engineering team really pushed the limits to set this new segment benchmark while demonstrating the impressive durability of the entire Ioniq vehicle platform. We expect this will be the first of many accolades for Ioniq.
At least you now know you’re unlikely to break your new Ioniq, however hard you push it. Perhaps Hyundai should have a nitrous kit as an option for the Ioniq?
