Hyundai Kona is Hyundai’s new small SUV – teased ahead of a debut
There’s a new small SUV / Crossover on the way from Hyundai – the Hyundai Kona – named after a place in Hawaii and expected to debut at New York Motor Show.
The Hyundai range of SUVs – currently comprising of the large Hyundai Santa Fe and the smaller Hyundai Tucson – is to be joined by a new, smaller SUV – the Hyundai Kona.Keeping Hyundai’s (revived) tradition of naming cars after places in the USA, the Kona is named after a district on the Big Island of Hawaii, said to reflect the island’s energetic image and lifestyle. Presumably the Hyundai Kona is for young buyers of a similar ilk.
Teased (above) ahead of a likely New York Motor Show debut, the Kona looks to boast a new Hyundai design language, with what appears to be slim running lights at the top of the front wings and a new look grille. But the photo’s really not much to go on.
Hyundai do say the Kona has a progressive style, SUV genes and premium features, which would suggest it will probably have a 4WD option despite being more compact, and give us an idea of where Hyundai’s design is heading.
Frankly, we’re not sure whether the Kona is based on the i20 or i30, exactly what sort of size it’s going to be or where it’s going to fit in the market.
But Hyundai are calling it a B Segment SUV’ so it looks like it’s heading up against strong competition like the Toyota C-HR.
If, as we think, the Hyundai Kona is heading for a debut in New York, that’s less than a fortnight away. So expect more teases quite soon.
