Lamborghini promise a ‘Super Sports Car’ for Frankfurt. Could it be a road-going version of the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo?
Lamborghini teased a new ‘Super Sports Car’ for Frankfurt last week, and we mulled over the possibilities of what Lamborghini were going to reveal. But what we didn’t consider was a last-hurrah for the Gallardo in the form of the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo.
We speculated that Lamborghini may be taking a production version of the Sesto Elemento to Frankfurt. Or perhaps a new concept of the Estoque or even a Lamborghini SUV Concept.
We mooted the possibility of the Aventador Roadster – although it seemed too soon – and also of the Lamborghini Urus – the Aventador on steroids we expect before long. But on reflection all have more against them turning up at Frankfurt than for.
So the rumour now gaining credence that Lamborghini are planning a big wave goodbye from the Gallardo before it becomes the Cabrera by producing the ultimate Gallardo – the Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo – sort of adds up.
The Gallardo Super Trofeo may ring a bell with Lamborghini aficionados as a track-special, limited edition Gallardo. And they’d be right. But it seems that 30-run track special may be recreated for the road in similar numbers.
That will mean a Gallardo that is substantially lighter than even the Gallardo Superleggera and will probably end up having no windows, no seats and probably no interior to speak of.
It will be fully be-winged and big-booted, so Lamborghini will need to save weight by taking away anything that isn’t strictly necessary for locomotion. That means every home comfort dumped – and then some – all in the name of shaving a tenth off a 0-60 time.
We don’t get hair-shirt supercars. But there’s no denying that a Gallardo Super Trofeo road car would be dramatic and as such perhaps a perfect last-hurrah for the Lamborghini that has s0ld more than any Lamborghini in history.
All that said, this latest bit of speculation could be just as off the mark as the earlier speculation. Why? Because Lamborghini already did the ‘Road-Going’ Super Trofeo in a way last year with the Gallardo LP570-4 Blancpain Limited Edition, which was a lightweight Gallardo based on the Super Trofeo track cars.
So we’re really none the wiser. We just have another option for Lamborghini’s Super Sports Car.
