Jaguar Land Rover presents – doors that open themselves
Jaguar Land Rover are planning to deliver an automatic valet for their cars, with doors which open themselves as you approach.
We’ve got used to cars which unlock as you approach, and tailgates which open with a swipe of the foot (well, some of the time). Next up is doors which open themselves.Jaguar Land Rover has decided the time has come to take away the trauma of actually having to open a car door with a new automated system which will open the door for you as you approach so you can simply step in.
JLR are testing their ‘Mobility Door Prototype’ on a Range Rover Sport, and it uses the existing keyless entry tech together with motion sensors to detect the driver as they approach and opens the door. Once you’re inside, it’s just a push of an overhead button to close the door.
Of course, the tech is about more than just fancy gadgets for the bone idle, it’s about technology making driving easier for this with disabilities, and JLR has roped in Invictus Games gold medallist Mark Ormrod to advise. He said:
This innovative Jaguar Land Rover technology would be such a benefit to me and has real power to change lives for those who face problems getting in and out of the car. Opening and closing the car door may seem like such an insignificant task to many people but sometimes it’s the small, everyday obstacles which people take for granted that are most frustrating to overcome for those living with disabilities.
It should make life more civilised for ‘Zapper-Grabber’ car thieves too.
