If you’re going to have a press launch for a serious off-road car, Iceland is as good a pick as any. Which is why there are umpteen new Discovery Sports currently running around the almost surreal landscape of Iceland to show that it has all the off-road prowess a real Land Rover should.
It’s clear from the video that the new Disco Sport is a perfect off-roader, tackling the sort of terrain the normal soft-roaders wouldn’t have a chance with. Which may not seem terribly important to most buyers, but it’s at the root of Land Rover’s DNA, and its USP too.
But the more we see of the Disco Sport, the more we wonder if it will add to Land Rover‘s sales or just cannibalise others in the range?
Yes, the Range Rover Evoque is more style oriented, and the full-size Discovery more commodious and potentially more able. But the new Discovery Sport is looking more and more like the real star in the Land Rover range.
Let’s hope, for Land Rover’s sake, that it simply adds to the big sales numbers Land Rover has enjoyed in recent years by taking sales away from cars like the BMW X3, and not from its siblings.

I can’t help thinking this car is a good addition to the range; I find the Evoque too small for holidays, and the previous Freelander II a little dumpy in the styling. Whereas I wouldn’t buy either of those, I like this a lot. There is a possibility some may downsize from the Discovery, but I see this as attracting many more to the brand. Now where are those new engines?
