The F1 Malaysia Grand Prix 2010

The F1 Malaysia Grand Prix 2010 - Red Bulls out front at the start

We have the results of the 2010 Malaysian Grand Prix. Will Red Bull finally manage a finish? Will McLaren and Ferrari be able to impact from the back of the grid? Will Schumacher impact?

Let’s get it out of the way first. Red Bull have achieved a one-two in  the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang this morning, finally managing to do what they’d threatened all season. But it wasn’t pole-sitter Webber who won the race, but team mate Vettel, who took his team mate on the first corner and stayed there for the rest of the race. And that’s it for Red Bull. Started at the front. Won the race. Job done.

The real action came as a result of the disastrous qualifying by McLaren and Ferrari, meaning the two strongest teams in the field so far this year having to battle through the also-rans. Hamilton was the most impressive, managing to get from 20th to 6th by the end of the race. Button didn’t fare quite so well, managing only 8th, but creditable performances from a rotten qualifying. Button tried a similar trick to last week in Australia by changing tyres early, but he ended up struggling to make them last for 49 laps, in the process losing out to Massa in the Ferrari and almost to Alonso.

Alonso did well to nurse a Ferrari with a dodgy gearbox to the point where he was challenging Button for 8th place by the end of the race, but his engine gave out whilst attempting an overtake on Button on lap 55. That appears to be five blown Ferrari engines already this year. More than eight starts to incurr penalties. And we’re only three races in to the season.

So what about the Mercedes team? Well, Rosberg did well and managed to stay up front, coming in just behind the Red Bulls for a podium finish. And Michael Schumacher? His race ended on lap 10 when his wheel came adrift.
