McLaren’s MSO evokes the legendary McLaren F1 with a three-seat BP23 HYPER GT

McLaren’s three-seat BP23 HYPER GT project teased

The McLaren BP23 Project from McLaren’s Special Operations is teased as a three-set Hyper GT arriving in limited numbers in 2019.

Even now, more than 20 years since the McLaren F1 was revealed, it’s still a benchmark for hypercars, and still a touchstone for McLaren’s efforts. So step forward another McLaren which owes its existence to the F1 – the McLaren BP23.

All the BP23 is at the moment is a new project by McLaren’s Special Operations (MSO), and the ‘BP23’ moniker (it stands for ‘Bespoke Project 2 with 3 Seats) will doubtless disappear before the car actually arrives in customer hands in 2019.

McLaren are also being a bit vague about the BP23, although we do have the teaser image above and some snippets of information to digest.

McLaren say the BP23 is a Hyper GT because it is designed for long journeys with high levels of performance and driver engagement, combined with high levels of refinement.

The look of the BP23 is clearly influenced by McLaren’s P1, and will have a shrink-wrapped carbon fibre body, dihedral doors – which will be powered – and bespoke switchgear.

McLaren are promising BP23 will be one of the most powerful McLarens created (although that’s quite a short list to judge by) so it’s seems highly likely it will have a version of the 3.8 litre engine under every McLaren as well as the hybrid bits from the P1, for something around 1000bhp.

It seems that every one of the BP23s McLaren is planning are already sold, and each of their owners will be encouraged to immerse themselves in the project over the coming years.

Incidentally, there will be just 106 cars built, which is exactly the number of F1s – combined road and track versions – which were built. Although the number of F1s built was only because they ran out of buyers willing to pay £640k for the F1.

Clearly, a price rather higher than that hasn’t put off buyers this time round.
