The new Mercedes S-Class Maybach – effectively a replacement for the Maybach brand – will debut at the LA Auto Show in November as the ultimate S-Class.

The Mercedes S-Class Maybach spied ahead of an LA debut
We’ve known for some time that the new Mercedes S-Class will spawn a number of variants, and that one of those will be an ultra-luxury, ultra-long (18 feet) version with a Maybach badge and a very premium price.
Car and Driver has been talking to Mercedes’ head of global design, Gordon Wagener, who confirmed the Maybach’s arrival at the LA show next month, and it seems the Maybach will still look like an S-Class, just bigger, more luxurious and more expensive, probably with a bespoke interior and V12 power. Weneger calls the S-Class Maybach a ‘Haute Couture’ model, so there’s clearly going to be endless opportunities to spend more on bespoke fitments.
Which is all pretty much as expected, but what we hadn’t really expected was the Wagener would reveal that Mercedes want the Maybach sub-brand to be the luxury equivalent of AMG.
That means there’s every chance that there will be a Maybach S-Class Coupe to take on cars like the Bentley Continental and a Maybach version of the GL to take on high-end Range Rovers and the upcoming Bentley Falcon SUV.
Me3rcedes has obviously decided they don’t need Maybach to be a stand-alone brand to take sales from the likes of Bentley and Rolls Royce (or Range Rover), but are they right?
