Mercedes X-Class is Professional Pick-up of the Year
The 2018 Professional Pick-Up and 4×4 awards have been announced, and it’s the new Mercedes X-Class voted the pick-up of the year. But the Toyota Hilux is the Workhorse of the year.
Professional Pickup & 4×4 is the UK’s only pick-up truck magazine, aimed at professional users like farmers, fencers, builders, hunters, estate managers and more, and they’ve just held their 2018 awards for the best pick-ups.The winner, perhaps unsurprisingly, was the new Mercedes X-Class, a Mercedes fettled take on the Nissan Nirvana but with lashings of Mercedes ‘Premium’ in the mix.
The judging panel for the awards was made up of 12 pick-up owners who use their pick-ups in their professional lives, and they declared the X-Class the winner thanks to its lifestyle chops, rating it the most comfortable, refined and best furnished of all the contenders, but also noting it had a decent 3.5t towing capacity and decent 4WD. But with prices starting at £34k, it’s not exactly the cheapest.
So if you want the most luxurious pick-up, a pick-up which can still do the working bit – and your pockets are deep enough – then the Mercedes X-Class is the one to go for.

Toyota Hilux is Workhorse Pick-up of the Year
But what if you’re a bit more careful with the pennies but want a pick-up that’s a real workhorse?
If that’s the case, then the winner of the Workhorse of the Year, the Toyota Hilux, is the pick-up to go for, according to Professional Pickup & 4×4 .
The judges noted that the Hilux has long been renowned for its abilities as a real workhorse, and that the latest generation Hilux continues that tradition with great residuals, a 3.5t towing capacity, high build quality and durability. They also noted it was comfortable and handled well on road. The Toyota Hilux costs from £23.5k.
You pays your money and takes your choice.
