Monty’s Rolls Royce Phantom III is one of the ‘The Great Eight Phantoms’
The Rolls Royce Phantom III used by Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery during WWII is on of RR’s ‘Great Eight Phantoms’ for the new Phantom launch.
Earlier this month, Rolls Royce announced that the new Phantom – the Rolls Royce Phantom VIII – would debut in July in Mayfair, and that it would be revealed alongside seven of the greatest Phantoms in RR’s history in ‘The Great Eight Phantoms’ exhibition. When Rolls Royce made the announcement of new Phantom’s debut, they revealed that one of the historic Phantoms would be a Phantom I owned by Hollywood legend Fred Astaire, and now we know the second comes from a very different world.
In fact, the second of the ‘Great Phantoms’ comes with a history of World War II firmly engrained in every pore of the Phantom III which was Field Marshall Montgomery’s favourite car.
Although it was one of three Phantom’s Monty had during the war, this is the ‘Butler’ Phantom – originally commissioned by Alan Butler, Chairman of De Havilland – complete with bodywork by HJ Mulliner and featuring a dramatic sloping windscreen.
Used by Monty all the way up until 1962, it could no doubt tell many a tale of the Great and the Good of the period, and is a stunning example of a bespoke Phantom III.
The subject of an extensive restoration by P&A Wood, the Monty Phantom II is a great choice for the ‘The Great Eight Phantoms’ Rolls-Royce Exhibition in Mayfair to celebrate the launch of the new Phantom VIII in July.
