New 2017 Audi A5 Sportback (& S5 Sportback) revealed – but can you tell?

The new 2017 Audi A5 Sportback – and the performance Audi S5 Sportback – have been revealed ahead of a debut at the Paris Motor Show.

Audi has a car for every niche, and it’s not always easy to work out exactly which Audi is which without taking a peek at the badge. And the arrival of the 2017 Audi A5 Sportback – and the 2017 Audi S5 Sportback if you want a bit more performance – doesn’t make the task any easier.

When Audi revealed the new A5 three-door Coupe in June, we did say it wasn’t easy to see the changes Audi had made. And the new A5/S5 five-door coupe – aka the Sportback – is just as familiar.

In fact, the front end of the Sportback is exactly the same as the Coupe, and looked at from the back it looks identical too. Clearly it has five doors so the profile looks different to the coupe, but it then looks the same as the current model. But Audi buyers like it, which is what matters.

It.s much the same story inside, with a cabin straight from the A5, although there’s a door on each side at the back to give you a clue you’re in the Sportback. There’s still not an abundance of room in the back though.

It may come as a shock, but engine choices for the A5 Sportback – a variety of outputs from 2.0 and 3.0 litre diesels and a 2.0 litre petrol – are the same too, and the S5 Sportback surprisingly gets the same 394bhp 3.0 litre V6 as the S5 Coupe.

The new Audi A5 and S5 Sportback are expected in Audi’s UK dealers in early 2017, by which time Audi may have decided how much more than the Coupe the Sportback is going to be.
