The Land Rover Discovery Commercial returns for the new generation, offering two seats with a big load area behind – and low BIK rates too.
We weren’t entirely sure, as Land Rover push the Discovery even further upmarket with the latest Discovery ‘5’, that they would deliver a commercial version. But they have.
Just as Land Rover has for every generation of the Discovery to date, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery spawns a commercial version too – the poshest of vans you can buy.
Of course, there’s an element of tax avoidance going on here – just as there is with the ever-growing choice of four-seat pickups – because, if you wish, no one need know you’re driving a van at all.
Yes, Land Rover ditch everything inside behind the driver and front seat passenger and shove in a cargo space, but from the outside it looks pretty standard Discovery with privacy glass panels covering the panels which have turned it in to a van.
The load space isn’t enormous – it’s 1635mm long, 939mm high and 1411mm wide – and is actually less in total than you’d get putting down all the seats in a regular Discovery. But that’s because there’s a big metal guard between the load space and front seats to stop you getting decapitated by a flying load.
Elsewhere it’s pretty standard Discovery, with a front cabin which looks little different, permanent 4WD, Terrain Response and the choice of a 2.0 litre SD4 diesel with 237bhp oir a 3.0 litre TD6 with 254bhp, together with automatic gearbox.
The Discovery van is actually £2,800 more than the standard Discovery – starting from £48,695 – although, as a business user, VAT will be reclaimable and the BIK rates are standard, cheap as chips, van rates.
The 2018 Land Rover Discovery Commercial is now on sale at Land Rover’s UK dealers, with first customer cars due Q2 2018.
