The Mercedes-AMG G63 arrives just weeks after the new G-Wagen was revealed, with 577 bhp from its 4.0 litre V8 Turbo. Debuts at the Geneva Motor Show.
It’s less than a month since the new Mercedes G-Class was revealed as an SUV with evolutionary styling but lots of modern technology going on under the skin and in the cabin. But now the performance G-Wagen has arrived – the 2018 Mercedes-AMG G63 – and it takes all that’s good with the new G-Class and endows it with a 577bhp V8, enough to batter through the air to 62mph in a scarcely believable 4.5 seconds.
That’s as quick as the four-seat Ferrari 612 Scaglietti was just a few years ago, and quicker than Land Rover’s performance halo SUV, the Range Rover Sport SVR.
The G63 comes with that monster V8 mated to a new AMG Performance 9 Speed 4Matic four-wheel drive delivering a more rear-biased setup on road, but its improved efficiency compared to the old 5.5 litre V8 in the G63 means headline economy comes in at an impressive 21.4mpg. But you’ll still be lucky to get half that most of the time.
You can pick from five different on-road driving modes as well as three for off-road use, and even though the G63 will probably never venture off-road in an owners hands there’s still locking diffs and low range to make sure you can batter any landscape.
As you’d expect, the G63 gets a visual AMG makeover too, with a new vertical bar grille, new bumpers, side exhausts, ‘V8 BiTurbo’ badges and wheels up to 22″.
But the question is: “How much does the new Mercedes-AMG G63 Cost?”.
Mercedes aren’t saying yet, but if you need to ask…
