The new Volvo S90 being crash tested
We’ve got video of the new Volvo S90 being crash tested in Sweden and showing just how well it survives a severe overlap crash.
The new Volvo S90 was only revealed last month – ahead of its public debut at this month’s Detroit Motor Show – but already Volvo are busy crashing the S90 to demonstrate just how well it performs when things go wrong and a coming together occurs.Volvo’s safety record is second to none – so you’d expect the S90 to perform well in a crash test – but what’s really remarkable is how well the S90 survived.
As far as we can see – despite a heavy overlap impact – the S90’s windscreen survived intact, we can’t see any deformation in the A-Pillar and it looks like the occupants will have nothing more than a much increased heart rate.
Of course, Volvo’s raft of safety technologies in the S90 will do everything they can to mitigate a crash in the first place, so actual crashes should be kept to a minimum.
The technologies include many carried over from the XC90 – which scored 100 per cent for safety in last year’s EURO NCAP tests – including Run-off Road Mitigation to prevent drivers leaving the road, Run-off Road Protection to reduce injuries if the car does leave the road and City Safe to help avoid collisions in town. There’s also large animal detection on the S90, although we don’t see many Elks on UK roads.
But if all else fails, it’s good to see how well the S90 stands up to impacts, thanks in no small part to the extensive use of hot-formed boron steel to create a complete safety cage around the S90’s occupants.

Peter Abatan says
That is just simply amazing. While one would think that the front wheel may invade the driver’s space in the cabin, it simply shears off with no impact to the occupant. I believe Volvo is the car maker to beat when it comes to safety, it is a skill that Volvo has mastered craftily.
