Porsche has confirmed that the hybrid hypercar – the Porsche 918 Spyder – shown at Geneva this year will go in to production.
As the man from Porsche said when asked about the Porsche 918 Spyder Concept at the Geneva Motor Show this year, ‘Porsche has never shown a car they didn’t go on to build’. So despite the concept label we knew it would happen. And now it has.
Porsche has confirmed that the 918 Spyder will become a production model, exactly as the world expected and as we reported in April when Porsche had already had 900 serious enquiries on the 918. Just to recap, the Porsche 918 Spyder offers:
“… a V8 petrol delivering ‘…more than 500bhp’, a trio of electric motors that can contribute a further 218bhp which, when working in tandem with the V8, can produce a 3 second 0-60mph time and a top speed of 200mph. It can also manage 90mpg and emissions of 70g/km CO2 when you stop blatting and switch to eco-mode.”
Which will make it a quite extraordinary follow up to Porsche’s last hypercar, the Porsche Carrera GT. We have no news yet on when Porsche will get the first 918 on the road, but it is expected that the 918 Spyder will be at Pebble Beach next month and the order book will be officially opened. We also expect the 918 Spyder to cost €500,000 + tax.
Wonder if you’ll be able to use the electric car subsidy?
