It’s almost three months since Land Rover unveiled the new Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4 (LR4) at the New York Motor Show. They managed to release prices for the new Range Rover – which was also revealed at the New York Motor Show – early last month, but they’ve only just got round to releasing prices for the RR Sport and LR4, which goes on sale in the UK in September.
Prices have nudged up from the old model (which Land Rover probably needs desperately after posting huge losses for last year) but so to does the specification.
The Land Rover Discovery 4 starts at £31,995, heading up to £47,695. But what’s new on the LR4? Well, the 3.0 litre diesel is the big news. This is essentially the same engine you get in the Jaguar XF diesel, and is a huge improvement. You also get Hill Hold, a 360 degree camera, auto-dipping lights and a couple of extra terrain settings – hard rock and sand. The exterior gets a tweak with a bit of a ‘Range Rover’ makeover, and the interior gets classier.
The Range Rover Sport also gets a makeover and comes out on top in the engine stakes. Out goes the old 4.2 litre and in comes the 5.0 litre supercharged lump from the XFR. The diesel also gets upgraded to Jaguar’s excellent 3.0 litre. The exterior gets a few tweaks to keep it fresh until the ‘real’ new cars arrive in a couple of years, and the interior is tidied and tweaked.
Decent all round changes to both the Range Rover Sport and Discovery 4, which should help the somewhat stagnant sales at Land Rover. But they probably won’t start to recover until the next generation of cars starts to appear. And that won’t be until at least 2011.
