Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV is…the Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Rolls Royce has announced that the production name for their SUV, which we’ve been referring to as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, will be its production moniker after all.
It’s three years since Rolls-Royce announced that they had a new project – Project Cullinan – to deliver a new high-riding Rolls-Royce, an SUV in other words, to show the world what a luxury SUV is all about.Since then we’ve got used to calling it the Rolls-Royce Cullinan as RR kept interest alive with ‘Official’ spy shots of their SUV out playing, but it seemed it wasn’t going to be the Cullinan after all.
In fact, back in December, the head of Rolls-Royce in Asia Pacific, Hal Seridun, made it absolutely clear the Cullinan name wasn’t a production name, but simply the internal project name.
Seridun told us that the actual, production name would be revealed in Q1 2018, and here we are bang in the middle of that period and Rolls Royce has named its new car…the Cullinan.
Whether it was always RR’s plan, or they’ve decided there’s so much out there with Cullinan that it would be too confusing to change it, we don’t know.
But they do say Cullinan is the perfect name for their new car as a car of clarity and purpose with flawless quality and preciousness – just like the diamond after which it’s named.
When it does arrive as a production car in 2019 – although likely to be seen before – the Cullinan SUV will become the second Rolls-Royce model built on the platform underpinning the new Phantom, and doubtless boast a price not yet envisaged for any production SUV.
