Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 – is it even a car?

The Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100 has been revealed by RR as part of BMW’s centenary celebrations, as a look at Rolls Royce future.
2016 is BMW’s centenary year, and as Rolls-Royce is owned by BMW they are part of the celebrations and have delivered their vision of the future of Rolls-Royce – the Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100. But it’s not a car. It’s not a car because it doesn’t have any means of being driven, it’s simply a luxury transport pod, driven by computer and powered by an unspecified electric powertrain.
In this Rolls-Royce vision of their future, RR will deliver a chassis and powertrain around which customers can build their idea of what their ‘Car’ should look like, a return, say RR, to the days of coach built cars where the customer had the final say on how their car looked.
Perhaps, on that basis, Rolls-Royce would have been better off letting their customers design the Vision Next 100 (although they say it’s designed around what they think customers will want) because it just looks like a cartoon version of a ‘future car’ with its enclosed wheels and comic book looks.
Inside the comic book exterior lurks an interior that is really just the back seats of a current RR, a thumping great OLED screen and a virtual personal assistant. Where’s the vision?
RR say their future is all about a ‘car’ that can deliver ‘The Personal Vision’ (designed by the customer), ‘The Effortless Journey’, ‘The Grand Sanctuary’ and ‘The Grand Arrival’. All ambitions (with the exception of a real personal vision) current cars already offer.
If this is the future of Rolls Royce, does Rolls Royce have a future?
