Subaru has revealed the 2011 Impreza WRX ST Saloon at the New York Motor Show with a great big wing, four doors, suspension tweaks but no extra power.
You may remember a couple of days ago we brought you a tease from Subaru about the Subaru Impreza WRX STI saloon due to be unveiled in New York this week. All we could really tell from the tease we got was that it was an Impreza with a big wing. And guess what? We were right. It’s a new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Saloon with a big wing. What a shock.
It’s actually the first time in years that Subaru has produced a four door and the first time ever that they’ve produced an STI with a saloon setup.
The STI gets a set of suspension tweaks including thicker anti-roll bars front and rear together with stiffer bushes and springs and a set of lighter 18″ alloys. Oh, and it also gets the thumping great wing at the back which, according to Subaru, “…aids high-speed stability and on-the-limit handling“.
What you don’t get is any extra oomph, although the WRX STI Saloon will sound like it has more oomph. Subaru have had a play with the exhaust to make it “Meaner and Louder“, so you may not go any quicker but it’ll sound like it.
Will we get the Impreza WRS STI Saloon in the UK? Probably unlikely, unless importer International Motors get a deluge of emails from UK Scooby fans demanding the right to buy.
So we’ll have to wait and see.

reminds me of an evo, looks great. unfortunately for subaru, they are going to get people complaining about reverting back to saloons after having so many people complaining about making a hatchback…impossible to keep everyone happy!

I have been waiting for Subaru to bring out a saloon version of the New Impreza STI. And seeing the picture of it i am not dissapointed it is gorgeous. It’s a lot better looking than the Hatch.

The new Subaru STI Saloon? Put one of those square registration plates on the nearside bumper, and we are back to the EVO 9 era! Well done Subaru! I would like to upgrade my 04 plated WRX to an STI, and have been waiting in vain (apparently), for the current batch of Scoobie designers to be put to sleep. This new American effort does nothing to inspire me, even if it were to be made available to the UK Market. Perhaps the hatch version is slowly breaking my resistance down!
I reckon the old teardrop headlamp version was one of the most beautifully designed Subaru Imprezas to come over to the UK.
The number of admiring comments I got from folks as the car stood waiting on the ferry approach slope at Lochaline, (prior to travelling across to the Isle of Mull) that sunny afternoon, was most encouraging, and made me appreciate I’d bought something special. Derek. Enthusiastic 58 year old!
