The Tesla Model 3 – Tesla’s new compact premium model, revealed in March 2016 – will start to roll off Tesla’s production line this Friday, 7 July 2017.

For Tesla to fulfil its promise – and huge market capitalisation – it was always going to have to do something more than deliver a high-end electric saloon – the Model S – and a high-end electric SUV – the Model X.

The car that Elon Musk expects to make Tesla a real industry giant, the new Tesla Model 3, was revealed over a year ago as a concept, and it had a big impact.

With promises of a starting price of $35,000 (that’s around £27k at today’s exchange rate, but expect it to be more like £35k), the Model 3 garnered huge interest, with Tesla reportedly taking more than 400,000 deposits in no time at all.

But there were big doubts about Tesla’s ability to deliver the volume of production needed to fulfil the orders they were receiving, and Elon Musk’s declaration that the Model 3 would be rolling out before the end of 2017 seemed a bit of a hope over expectation statement.

However, Elon Musk announced last night that Model 3 production will start this week, the first car will roll off the line on Friday (7 July 2017), and that there will be a party to handover the first 30 cars at the end of July.

He went on to say that production levels will be 100 cars in August, 1.400 in September, and that by December they will be rolling out 20,000 Model 3s a month.

Handover party for first 30 customer Model 3’s on the 28th! Production grows exponentially, so Aug should be 100 cars and Sept above 1500.

Looks like we can reach 20,000 Model 3 cars per month in Dec

It does look as if Musk has confounded his critics once again, and it’s going to be very interesting to see exactly what the production version of the Model 3 delivers.

Despite a launch in the US from this week, don’t expect the Model 3 to arrive in the UK any time soon; it is at least a year away.
