The 2019 Toyota Corolla (pictured) will replace the Toyota Auris in the UK
The Toyota Auris will become the Toyota Corolla globally, including in the UK, when the new Corolla debuts at the Paris Motor Show in October.
As far back as 2011 we asked if the Toyota Auris name would be dropped in favour of the Toyota Corolla when it was replaced in 2013. It seems we were a bit out on the timing, but that’s exactly what’s happening next year.Toyota has announced that the Auris will be no more from 2019, and the Corolla will be the favoured nameplate globally, with the Auris badge consigned to history as a blip in the Corolla’s global dominance as the best-selling name plate in history.
The new Toyota Corolla will debut in October at the Paris Motor Show, with the Corolla Touring Sports estate arriving alongside the new Corolla Hatch, with underpinnings using the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform instead of the three platforms currently in use for the Auris/Corolla.
We assume that means the new Toyota Auris, revealed in Geneva earlier this year, won’t actually make it on sale until the New Year, and then it will come with a Corolla badge, not an Auris one. And it will be built in the UK.
Dr Johan van Zyl, Toyota’s Europe CEO, said:
The TNGA engineering and design philosophy brings a whole new dimension to our next generation C-segment models.
Adding to Corolla’s renowned quality, desirability and reliability, it delivers the more emotional values that our customers aspire to, such as a distinctive design, interior refinement, rewarding driving dynamics and powerful yet efficient hybrid electric powertrains.
There is no better moment than the launch of the upcoming new generation model to reintroduce the Corolla name to our C-segment hatchback and wagon.
Expect the new Toyota Corolla to arrive in Toyota’s UK showrooms in early 2019. And expect a focus on Hybrid powertrains with no diesel options.
