Volkswagen Golf Alltrack – VW reveal the ‘Crossover’ Golf

The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack has been revealed ahead of a debut at the Paris Motor Show next week featuring extra cladding and a raised ride height. On sale summer 2015.

With the world falling in love with cars that do things they’ll almost never need, car makers are filling more and more niches with new models that have an element of Off Road ability. Step forward the new 2015 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.

Just as they did with the Passat Alltrack, VW has taken the Estate version and made it a bit more butch, in effect turning it in to a sort of ‘Crossover’ Golf with the ability to take on (slightly) more rugged terrain. Think car boot sale car parks and school rugby game parking rather than green-laning.

That means new bumpers front and back, black plastic cladding bolted on to various vulnerable points – like the wheelarches – roof rails and an extra 20mm added to the ride height for getting over rough(er) stuff.

Engine options look set to be a 1.8 litre petrol with 177bhp and 41.5mpg, a 1.6 litre TDI with 108bhp and 60.1mpg and a 2.0 litre TDI which can be had with 148bhp and 57.7mpg or 181bhp and 55.4 mpg. The more powerful version will also get to 62mph in a quite decent 7.8s.

All the engine options will come with VW’s 4Motion four-wheel-drive which sends power to the front wheels by default but diverts power to the back wheels when it senses slip.

Expect the interior to be pure 7th generation Golf, but perhaps with a few more toys to justify a price that will be a chunk north of the regular Golf Estate.

The Volkswagen Golf Alltrack will debut next week at the Paris Motor Show, and it should arrive in VW’s UK dealers in summer 2015.
