The Volkswagen Golf R400 – VW’s extreme Golf Concept from last year – looks set to arrive at the Frankfurt motor show as the VW Golf R420.
When the VW Golf R400 arrived at the Beijing Motor Show last year, it looked production-ready, and it idn’t take long for VW to confirm that the most powerful Golf ever will go in to production at some point. That point seems to be very soon, with Car having a chat with VW’s R&D chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser and concluding that the production version of the R400 will be ready to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
Interestingly, Car are also convinced that it won’t be an R400 that debuts, but an R420 with 414bhp (420PS), which fits in with our report from almost a year ago when the same Heinz-Jakob Neusser Car have been chatting to confirmed more power for a production R400.
The R400 Concept was said to get to 62mph in a scant 3.9 seconds – on its way to 174mph – and although a more powerful production version is likely to be limited to 155mph, it should manage to deliver that sub-4 second 0-62mph the concept promised with ease, and get the power down properly too with its 4WD setup.
As far as price is concerned, it looks like VW are planning a smidge under €50k in Germany, which should translate in to something around £40k in the UK.
That’s a lot of money for a hot hatch, but when it’s a hot hatch that’s quicker than a Jaguar F-Type V8 R, it sounds like a bargain.

This could be all the car you’ll ever need – especially if they do an estate!
