Volkswagen’s Dieselgate MEA CULPA
Volkswagen has delivered a new promotional video for the ID Buzz – called ‘Hello Light – admitting Dieselgate and underlining its new ‘Green’ direction.
It’s been clear that Volkswagen has been on a mission since Dieselgate to transform its image as a maker of dirty and illegal diesel-engined cars in to a maker of everything virtuous in the motoring world. The plans for the new VW ID 3 electric Hatch seem to have enveloped the company, with VW claiming the ID 3 is the third milestone in its history – after the VW Beetle and VW Golf.
It’s a brave move to move transition so rapidly from what has made the company a success in to a new future where plans are based on what VW wants, rather than what car buyers want.
Yes, the ID 3 looks to be a fine product, and holds real appeal, at the right price, but there is little evidence that the market is ready to give up ICE cars in favour of electric cars – however much VW wants that to be the case.
Now, as the PR for EVs continues, VW has released a new Video in which they admit the Dieselgate scandal and aim to illustrate they have learnt their lesson and will, in future, be delivering only clean, green cars to save the planet (and VW).
It’s all delivered to a Sound of Silence soundtrack from Simon and Garfunkel, with the closing message: “In the darkness, we found light“.
We can’t decide whether to cringe or applaud.
