Volvo Concept 40.2 looks set to be Volvo’s first EV
It seems the first electric car from Volvo won’t be an XC40 EV, but will be a standalone electric car based on the Volvo 40.2 Concept revealed in 2016.
It has seemed certain that the first electric Volvo – if you ignore what’s coming from Polestar – would be a 40 Series car after Volvo’s US boss outlined its likely price and spec.It also seemed likely it would be an electric version of the new XC40 or of the yet to be revealed V40 or S40. But it seems not.
According to Autocar, Volvo will be delivering their first electric car not as an EV take on an ICE model, but as a standalone EV.
That standalone EV will be a 40 Series car, but rather than an EV take on a regular 40 Series car it will a model all on its own and based on the 40.2 Concept we saw in 2016, which we assumed previewed the V40/S40.
Looking like a high-riding four-door coupe, the 40.2 will arrive in 2019 and, as we know, come with a choice of power and battery setups to give a choice for customers (and different price points), with Volvo now saying it will come with up to 310 miles range.
We’re not entirely convinced that Volvo wouldn’t be better electrifying the very appealing XC40 first, rather than a standalone model, but it seems an electric XC40 will follow shortly after.
