Aston Martin V12 Zagato revealed

Aston Martin V12 Zagato revealed ahead of Villa d'Este

Aston Martin V12 Zagato - at Villa d'Este

Aston Martin has revealed the Aston Martin V12 Zagato – based on the V12 Vantage – ahead of its debut at Villa d’Este.

Just last week we brought you a tease from Aston Martin of a new collaboration with Zagato to create a new Aston Martin and take it off to the glorious setting of Villa d’Este on Lake Como.

Tease done and now the real deal is here – the Aston Martin V12 Zagato.

We knew it would be glorious, and it is. The double-bubble roof is there, but not so pronounced it dominates. The front end brings to mind the first Aston Martin Zagato from 50 years ago – the DB4 GT Zagato.

There’s a huge vent on the front wings with a flash of chrome and the mark of Zorro in the centre. And out back there’s a big diffuser and Ferrari-esque round lights. It’s a bit better than merely competent.

Under the beautiful Zagato exterior lies a standard Aston Martin V12 Vantage with everything in standard tune, which means 510bhp and 420lb/ft of torque.

In race trim that will mean a stripped-out interior and roll cage and improved performance, but in road trim it will deliver the performance of the standard V12 Vantage. Which is certainly adequate.

Oddly, this show car for Villa d’Este is neither fish nor foul. We know Aston Martin are going racing with the V12 Zagato, at the Nurburgring and elsewhere. The Zagato here is on the way to the car that will hit the track – it has a stripped-out race interior – but externally it’s closer to a road car.

And, whatever Aston Martin may say about gauging opinion before producing the V12 Zagato, we know full well it’s going in to limited production. A limited production that will probably see the V12 Zagato starting to be built at CPP – just as the One-77 production draws to a close.

The only beef we have with the reveal of the new Zagato is the photos. There’s nothing wrong with the car – it’s glorious – but surely it deserved something better than cutouts on a drab grey background?

So we stuck one at Villa d’Este to make it look better.

Zagato are on form with this V12 Aston Martin. Evocative, stunning and contemporary.
