Auto Bild are reporting that Citroen are planning a Citroen DS2 to be the new Citroen 2CV. Which makes no sense.
We’re still not completely sure how the Citroen DS2 fits in to the Citroen range, even though this is a story we reported on back in 2009.
We’d heard that Citroen were to create a 21st century Citroen 2CV and call it the Citroen DS2. Which really made no sense at all.
The 2CV was always the economy option, beloved of French farmers and small businesses for several generations. So basic you could mend it with kitchen cutlery (always to hand in France) and so flimsy it always bent instead of breaking.
But the new DS range is supposed to be upmarket and exciting. Just like the brilliant DS3. So we weren’t sure how much sense our original story made, and we ended up commenting that all would eventually be as clear as mud. And now it is.
Auto Bild are now reporting pretty much what we said in 2009. They say we will see the Citroen DS2 in 2012, based on the C1 and offering a range of small, 3-pot turbo lumps and a 1.4 diesel. They say it will be five-door and take four passengers (big ask) and a starting price at around €12k.
Does the story make any more sense now Auto Bild are also reporting it? No. But we’re very keen to see a Citroen DS2 based on the Citroen C1.
We like the C1 a lot – it’s a great city car – and we love the DS3 range. Put the two together and you should have an unbeatable city car.
But how that makes it the new 2CV we have no idea.
