At this rate we’re going to be sticking up a couple of Top Gear videos every week from Top Gear – such is the quality this series.
This time we have the video review of the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series. Which on paper looks immense. But when we did a review of the Mercedes SL65 Black we came away with much the same impression as Jeremy. Astonishing car, but ultimately disappointing.
It gains a huge amount of power, but can’t really use it. The best thing about the Mercedes SL is the roof, and the SL65 Black doesn’t have it. And at £250k it’s a £100k cheaper than its nearest rival from the same stable – the McLaren SLR 722. But you can at least get the SLR 722 with a soft top.
The car Jeremy is driving in this piece was Mercedes own SL65 Black press car. And he did the piece before it was sold to Theo Walcott (who kindly lent it back for the show’s recording last week). We know the guy who was beaten to the purchase by half an hour. He’s now chuffed he missed out!
And we also know one guy who took delivery of his SL65 Black, compared it to the SLR 722 he already owned, and sold it a month later. Oh, and we believe there are going to be a total of 10 SL65 Blacks in the UK. And, because of the demand, Mercedes UK are trying to get some of the German allocation – that Mercedes in Germany can’t sell (they were allocated 40 cars) – transferred to the UK.
After Jeremy’s report, they probably shouldn’t bother.
