Volvo’s new Polestar Brand looks to be off to a flying start, with 5,000 expressions of interest in the Polestar 1, which could lead to production being doubled.
It’s just a few months since the Polestar 1 was revealed – the first car from Volvo’s new Polestar Brand – but there continues to be a buzz around the 600bhp hybrid coupe.Despite the fact the Polestar 1 isn’t an EV but a plug-in hybrid, despite Polestar wanting to get you paying a monthly subscription instead of buying one (although you may be able to buy a Polestar 1 – for around £135k), and despite there being no plans for RHD models, Polestar are almost fighting off interested buyers.
So far Polestar has received around 5,000 expressions of interest in a car which will have to wait for production until Polestar has built a plant in China to build it, so it’s not going to arrive until the end of 2019.
But with plans to build just 500 cars a year fro three years, Polestar already has expressions of interest more than three times the total three-year production run. So they’re going to have to do something.
Speaking to Automotive News, Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath said Polestar are now looking at what they need to do, and are considering doubling shifts at the new factory to deliver more cars. But that probably won’t be enough.
Official Polestar 1 pre-orders open in the spring, so it seems likely Polestar will decide what they need to do once they get proper firm commitments.
But with cars like the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid flying off the shelves – and 60 per cent of Panameras sold in Europe now plug-ins – there’s clearly an appetite for high-performance, high-price cars.
And the Polestar 1 fits the bill.
