Ferrari 599 GTO revealed

The Ferrari 599 GTO is now official

Ferrari has released details of the 599 GTO, a track car for the road. Extreme performance, advanced aerodynamics and just 599 being built.

The headline won’t exactly come as a shock if you read here regularly. The Ferrari 599 GTO – a limited edition, road-going version of the 599XX – has been on the way for quite a while. We first reported on a 599 GTO back in November, having learnt in October that Ferrari were taking deposits for a ‘Special’ 599. And we’d expected a reveal yesterady, but the Italians are not the best at time keeping. Sylish, yes. Punctual. no.

To do justice to the GTO tag – which incidentally stands for Gran Turismo Omologato – is a tall order. Used just twice before by Ferrari – once on the ’60s for the 250 GTO and again in the ’80s for the 288 GTO – the GTO tag has come to mean the ultimate in road-going Ferraris.

What we get with the Ferrari 599 GTO is pretty much what we expected. It has more in common with the track-only 599XX than its road-going sibling, delivering 670hp from its 6.0 litre V12 with 457lb/ft of torque on offer resulting in a 3.35 second 0-60mph and a top speed of 208mph. Ferrari say it will generate 144kg of downforce at 120mph, which should be enough to glue the GTO to the road.

On the aerodynamic front the 599 GTO gets a new front splitter, side sills, diffuser and spoiler. The bonnet gets a dose of ventilation and there are new 20″ alloys and there are also F1 donuts behind those alloys to help the air flow. Quite a package for a road-going car.

As you would expect, there’s heaps of detail in the Ferrari 599 GTO press release ahead of the public début at the Beijing Motor Show. If it rocks your boat – and how couldn’t it – then you need to be getting your deposit down soon – if it’s not already too late. It’s not quite Enzo territory with the limited numbers – there were 400 Enzos – but there are only going to be 599 Ferrari 599 GTOs.

Not quite as rare as an Enzo. Probably quicker. And less than half the price. Sounds a good deal.
