Mitsubishi has released price and model info on their compact crossover – the Mitsubishi ASX. Starts at £14,999 and on sale 1st July.
Update: Lots of traffic on the ASX (which augers well for this new compact crossover), so we’ve also added a Mitsubishi ASX photo gallery for those who’ve asked for more pictures.
Mitsubishi have been pushing their new compact SUV/Crossover – the Mitsubishi ASX – quite hard already, despite the fact that you couldn’t actually walk in to a shworoom and walk out with one. If you read here regularly (thank you) you’ll have seen adverts for the ASX popping up regularly. And now we know what it’s going to cost to get in an ASX and what you’ll get for your money.
Mitsubishi are making no bones about going after the Nissan Qashqai with the ASX, and they have every chance of scoring a bullseye. The starting price for the ASX 2 1.6 Petrol is £14,999, which undercuts the Qashqai 1.6 Visia by almost £400. They could almost have planned it. Perish the thought.
But the ASX doesn’t just score on price against the Qashqai, it makes sense against C-Segment cars as well, such as the Golf or Focus. And it is a very good trade-down option.
The ASX comes in three trim levels – 2, 3 and 4 (what happened to 1?) – and the basic spec includes alloys, AirCon, Stop-Go, keyless entry, adjustable steering column and a raft of airbags. There’s also the usual electronic nannies like ABS with EBD, ASC and traction control.
Move up to trim 3 and you get Climate, Cruise, privacy glass, auto lights and wipers and Bluetooth, and the top end trim 4 adds Leather, SatNav, reversing camera and a Kenwood ICE setup with iPod control. Which are more than decent specs all round.
Despite Mitsubishi’s prowess with SUVs and AWD technology the ASX will end up being supplied mostly in FWD form. Which is a bit of a shame. The 4WD version – only available with the 1.8 diesel lump – could turn out to be the only car in its sector – bar the bottom end Freelander 2 – with any real off-road ability.
But this section of the market place is far more about on-road style than off-road substance. The Mitsubishi ASX looks to us to be a serious contender. UK sales of the ASX start on 1st July and Mitsubishi hope to shift between 3 & 5,000 in the first year.
On the face of it that should be very do-able. But we’ll let you know if it’s as good as it looks once we’ve had a play.
