2011 Range Rover will get new 4.4 litre TDV8
As expected, Land Rover is to replace the 3.6 TDV8 with a 4.4 litre TDV8 offering 10% more power, better economy and lower emissions for the 2011 Range Rover.
It was always on the cards once Land Rover decided to replace the old 2.7 litre diesel in its cars with the new 3.0 litre. The 3.0 litre has so much torque and astonishingly good performance for its size (as we recently discovered when we reviewed the 2010 3.0 litre Range Rover Sport) that it comes shockingly close to outperforming the bigger engined – and more expensive – 3.6 TDV8 models.
Even more astonishingly, the 3.0 litre in the Range Rover isn’t the one out of the Jaguar XF S, it’s the low fat model. Stick in the XF S diesel and the 3.6 litre TDV8 would be toast. So something had to give, and as expected it’s the 3.6 litre TDV8 which is going to be replaced by a 4.4 litre TDV8 for the 2011 model cars.
The 3.6 litre TDV8 is a Ford-built lump and we’re assuming that this new 4.4 litre is a development of the same. Ford have had a bigger capacity V8 diesel on the go for a while with plans to stick it in the F-Series trucks. The new 4.4 litre delivers 308bhp and over 500lb/ft of torque and a 0-60mph of 7.5 seconds. Despite the extra power, emissions drop by 10% to 264g/km and average fuel consumption is 27.7mpg.
The power hike of a bit over 30bhp is very welcome – and moves the TDV8 away from the TDV6 – but we would like to have seen a bit more. Ford were estimating 330bhp in the F-Series, and that would make more sense as it would allow Land Rover to use the S version of the TDV6. Still, good improvement and with a sensible bit of chipping you’ll be able to up the output to nearer 350bhp without too much trouble – or cost.
It looks like the new 2011 Range Rover will be announced on 17th June- the 40th anniversary of the Range Rover’s launch – when we also expect Land Rover to give us the first viewing of the production-ready Range Rover LRX . That’s despite Land Rover’s insistence that the LRX won’t be revealed until the Paris Motor Show. Also on offer is likely to be the facelifted Freelander 2.
All of which should be enough to see Land Rover’s range through to the all new models in 2012/2013.

Because you can’t get it in the USA. The 4.4 diesel isn’t homologated for the US, and even though the 4.4 was designed by Ford in the US, Americans still don’t really ‘Get’ the diesel thing.
In the UK the RR Vogue with the 4.4 diesel costs £67,495, and the top of the heap Autobiography will set you back £81,395.

Can anybody tell me if Land Rover are planning to put the new 4.4 diesel in the Sport??

Not at the moment. In fact, possibly never. Early reports are that it is RR only because it is a bit taller and won’t fit in the Sport. We are trying to pin down the facts.
