Is the Pagani C9 to be the Pagani Huayra?

With Pagani finally scheduled to reveal their replacement for the Zonda – codenamed Pagani C9 – we’re hearing the new Pagani will be the Pagani Huayra – Quechua diealect for ‘Wind’.

As we know, Pagani are gearing up to show the world what they’ve created to replace the awesome Pagani Zonda, which until now we’ve referred to as the Pagani C9 – its Pagani code – because Horacio Pagani either hasn’t decided what to call his new baby or isn’t ready to tell us.

But the name is going to have to come out soon. We’ve already had the first tease for the Pagani C9 featuring a brief glimpse of a dies-cast model of Pagani’s new supercar, and the C9 is due to be revealed on 26th January. So it needs a name, and if Al Volante in Italy are to be believed then the new Pagani will be the Pagani Huayra.

Now I don’t know about you, but Huayra isn’t the easiest word to pronounce if you’re a North European. And if you’re an American it’s probably impossible. So that would seem to be a bit of a stumbling block to the voracity of the story. But Pagani isn’t a huge conglomerate with highly-paid advisers to point the right international direction for a name. It’s almost just one man and his whim. So if Horaciao Pagani wants his new car to be the Pagani Huayra, then Pagani Huayra is what it will be.

So what proof is there that Huayra is the name for the new Pagani? Well, Huayra is apparently the word for ‘Wind’ in the ancient South American dialect Quechua – spoken in Argentina, which is Horacio Pagani’s country of birth.

It also seems that Pagani has trademarked the name ‘Huayra’ with EU trademark agencies. For all we know ‘Huayra’ could be a name being used for yet another one-off Zonda and the buyer insisted on a trademark for the name so no one else could have one built.

We should find out in three weeks time if Pagani Huayra is the moniker of choice, or just a complete red herring. We’ve had a penchant for Pagani Fangio, but no one else has so we’re probably barking up the wrong tree with that guess.
